چکیده

THE CARCINOID TUMOR is a slow growing malignant lesion capable of distant metastases. Frequently, patients afflicted with this tumor develop a pathognomonic fibrosis of valves and endocardium involving primarily the right side of the heart. Although only 50% of the patients with metastatic disease survive for 3 years, these patients usually succumb from intractable congestive heart failure.' Recently, a patient was seen at the University of Rochester Medical Center with severe congestive heart failure due to carcinoid heart disease. This patient experienced dramatic improvement following corrective openheart surgery of both tricuspid and pulmonic valves. To the best of our knowledge, this represents the first patient with carcinoid heart disease successfully treated by surgery.

Heart Carcinoid Disease with Patent Foramen Ovale Treated by Mini Sternotomy

This case report was an attempt to present the importance of diagnostic echocardiography and closure of a patent foramen ovale in carcinoid heart disease. Herein, we present a case of a 48-year-old woman with a carcinoid metastasis presenting with tricuspid regurgitation, pulmonic stenosis, patent foramen ovale, and borderline left ventricular ejection fraction on an echocardiogram. Surgical in...

Carcinoid heart disease from ovarian primary presenting with acute pericarditis and biventricular failure.

A case is described of a 54 year old woman who had acute pericarditis with large exudative effusion accompanied by severe right and left ventricular failure. The patient was finally diagnosed with carcinoid heart disease from an ovarian carcinoid teratoma. She was treated with octreotide--a somatostatin analogue--followed by radical surgical resection of the neoplasm. At one year follow up only...

The optimal use of cardiac imaging in the quantification of carcinoid heart disease.

Carcinoid heart disease is a rare cause of right-sided valvular dysfunction, primarily mediated by serotonin. It is an important complication in patients with carcinoid syndrome and occurs in 20-50% of such patients. Echocardiography is the main technique used for the assessment of carcinoid heart disease, but other imaging modalities are also important, particularly in the quantification of th...

Carcinoid Heart Disease: Starting From Heart Failure

Carcinoid syndrome is the constellation of symptoms mediated by humoral factors produced by some carcinoid tumors. It consists primarily of vasomotor symptoms, gastrointestinal hypermotility, hypotension, and bronchospasm, due to the production and release of vasoactive substances. Carcinoid heart disease occurs in more than 50% of patients with carcinoid syndrome; in some cases, it represents ...

Carcinoid Heart Disease and Review of Literature

Carcinoid Heart Disease (CHD) is one of the rare causes of acquired valvular heart disease. CHD develops as a systemic manifestation of metastatic neuroendocrine tumors (NETs). When these tumors metastasize to the liver, they can release vasoactive amines into the systemic circulation, which can result in carcinoid syndrome and CHD. The key for diagnosing CHD is a thorough history and physical ...
